How to prepare your home for the arrival of a new pet

How to prepare your home for the arrival of a new pet

Once you’ve found the perfect pet from either the San Gabriel or Pasadena shelter, its time to take him/her home.  For any first-time pet owners that need help preparing their homes, the ASPCA has provided a great guide.  I’ve also included links that are dog or cat specific in case you need more detail.

Although we’re all tempted to take Fido immediately to the Pasadena dog park or Whiskers to see grandma, I would recommend a little restraint.  Your pet will need some time to adjust to his/her surroundings – a little bit of home preparation will go a long way to helping your new pet with this.  Please reach other San Gabriel Valley and Pasadena pet owners (including myself) if you need any additional tips.

Take a “dip” into pet ownership by volunteering at the San Gabriel and Pasadena Shelter

Take a “dip” into pet ownership by volunteering at the San Gabriel and Pasadena Shelter

Although I’ve been a Pasadena dog walker for a while now, my application to volunteer as a dog walker for the San Gabriel Humane Society was just recently accepted.  I went in for my orientation and first walk today.  It was such a rewarding experience.  I walked a total of 4 dogs – big (Pit Bull mix) and small (Chihuahua mix) for about 1 1/2 hours.  Surprisingly, my favorite walk of the day was with the Chihuahua – she was a great walker and was so happy just to get out – someone please adopt her!

My experience today got me thinking – volunteering at a shelter is a great way to find out if you’re fit to be a pet owner.  In addition to dog walkers, the San Gabriel shelter needs Adoption Counselors, Dog/Cat Socializers, Health/Clinic Staff Assistants, Laundry Aides, Groundskeeping/Gardening and Groomers/Bathers.  By volunteering, you get to see the “other side” of being a pet owner – the early mornings, walking, poop scooping, grooming, etc.   To find out more about volunteering at the Pasadena shelter, click here.  For the San Gabriel shelter, the one that I volunteered at, click here.

Consider adopting a pet from the San Gabriel or Pasadena Shelter

Consider adopting a pet from the San Gabriel or Pasadena Shelter

So you’ve decided you want to be a pet owner – Great!  However, a quick Google search will provide you with plenty of options.  Before you head out and spend hundreds or even thousands on a breeder, consider adopting a pet from the San Gabriel or Pasadena shelters.  Ask any Pasadena pet owner and they’ll probably refer you to the Pasadena Humane Society (ask for Kevin).  If that’s too far, make sure to visit the San Gabriel Humane Society (ask for Pat).  As the owner of a Pasadena dog walking and pet services company, I’ve dealt with both these organizations and can tell you that they are top notch – that’s why I’ve included them on my resources page!
