My Pet Garden – Pasadena Pet Store

My Pet Garden – Pasadena Pet Store

It’s been a while since we’ve posted, but we hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

A few weeks ago, we were invited to Citibank’s Pet Appreciation Day.  There, we met Joel and Kristina from My Pet Garden.  For those of you that don’t know, they’re located on Colorado and Sierra Madre, just west of the Vons.

Check out their store.  Joel and Kristina are both very knowledgable about pets and pet products.  Their store is super-cozy and a great alternative to the large chains.  You can tell they really care about their customer service (check them out on Yelp!).

Arcadia and Pasadena dog park etiquette

Arcadia and Pasadena dog park etiquette

As the owner of a Pasadena pet service company, it shocks me to see the lack of dog park etiquette at the Arcadia and Pasadena dog parks.  It’s not uncommon to run into individuals that don’t seem to care what their dogs (and themselves) are doing to others at the park.  Therefore, I am providing this link to anyone that currently visits or plans to visit the dog parks.  I hope this will serve as a guide so that all participants – people and dogs – can have a safe and enjoyable time at our dog parks.

How much exercise does your pet need?

Even more than people, our pets (especially dogs) need regular exercise.  According to a major publication, over 40% of pets in the US are overweight?  As a Pasadena pet sitter, I’ve seen it all too often.  Due to our busy schedules, many of us don’t spend enough time with our pets.  So how do we make it up to them?  We feed them extra treats.

In order to get to the root of the problem.  We need to understand just how much diet and exercise our pets need.  Below are several links to help you out.

For cat owners, according to The Pet Center, “the main reason for feline obesity (as well as obesity in other mammals) is the consumption of too much food. Deny it all you want but it is a fact.”  To read more about cat obesity and what to do, click here

For dog owners, in addition to a normal diet, you need to understand how much exercise your dog needs.  This link, should help you determine the exercise requirements for your breed of dog.  Once you understand your requirements, use this link to figure out how to meet those requirements.

My personal advice is to make sure you take your dog on daily dog walks for a minimum of 30 minutes.  It’d be even better if you could head over to the Arcadia or Pasadena dog park.  Or sign up for something like the agility course offered at the Pasadena shelter.  If you are unable to do it yourself, I highly suggest hiring a dog walker to help you out.  The benefits to you and your dog far outweigh the cost.

Pet sitting options for San Gabriel Valley and Pasadena pet owners

Pet sitting options for San Gabriel Valley and Pasadena pet owners

Inevitably, all pet owners at one point or another will need a pet sitter.  Whether you’re a busy Pasadena dog owner or a  Monrovia family heading out of town, finding a pet sitter is not an easy task.  Here are 2 great articles – the first one helps you determine if you should use a professional and the second helps you on how to choose a professional.

As the owner of a Pasadena pet sitting service, I can tell you there are services that meet all life-styles and budgets.  I generally divide the services into 3 categories – (1) Kennels, (2) In-Home Pet Boarding and (3) Pet Hotels.

(1) Kennels or Vets – generally this option is for budget conscious pet owners.  In order to keep their costs down, kennels and vets will generally cage their visitors and provide group feedings and group walks.  In addition, because they are caged, they are left alone at night with no one watching over them.

(2) In-Home Pet Boarding – this option is for pet owners that want to maintain a pets routine.  Generally, your pet will either stay in your home or will be brought to a sitter’s home.  The service should include a consultation where the sitter should learn everything about your pets daily routine.  Although it costs more than Kennels or Vets, it is easy to see that your pet will receive much more attention as the sitter will see to it that your pets daily routine is maintained.

(3) Pet Hotels – this option is for pet owners that like the In-Home Pet Boarding services but also allows their dogs to socialize in a common area.  Pet hotels are an excellent way for dogs to socialize with other dogs while their owners are away.  My only advice is to make sure you are aware of all charges – some hotels will charge you a separate fee for walking, playing, feeding and providing water for your pets.

Depending on your budget and how you view your pets, I’ve found that one of these three services will fit your needs.  Regardless, I believe it is always a good idea to see them for yourselves and determine which option is best for you and your four-legged family member.  Good luck and please feel free to contact us for more information.

Find a great San Gabriel Valley / Pasadena pet hospital or veterinarian

Find a great San Gabriel Valley / Pasadena pet hospital or veterinarian

The San Gabriel and Pasadena shelters will have provided your new pet with all its mandatory shots.  However, it is your responsibility to ensure that your pets are up-to-date on their shots (or holistic equivalent).  As a Pasadena dog walker and pet sitter, I can’t re-iterate  how important this is.

Do a quick Google search of “Pasadena pet hospitals or veterinarians” and you will be overwhelmed with the number of results.  I’d suggest you select several in your which have received good reviews from other pet owners and interview the vets.  After all, it is a relationship you will maintain for many years.  I have provided 2 links – one for cats and one for dogs to help you with your first vet visit.

Check out our website for links to some pet hospitals and vets in the area.  Good luck!

What to expect from your new pet during the critical first week

What to expect from your new pet during the critical first week

Surviving that first week home can really make or break the relationship between you and your new pet.  To help you get through this exciting, yet trying first week, I’ve provided 2 links – one for dogs and the other for cats.  Remember, it will take some time for your new pet to adjust from the surroundings at the San Gabriel or Pasadena shelter to your home.
